History of Grama Panchayat
Mariyapuram, which was once part of Kottayam District, was initially a part of Udumbanchola Panchayat and later became part of Kattappana Panchayat and Kamakshi Panchayat. Subsequently, Kamakshi Panchayat was divided, and Mariyapuram Panchayat came into existence on 10 February 1973. In the early days, people reached this area mainly on foot. In 1922, John, the Superintendent of the Malankara Estate, and his friend Thomas, an engineer, came to the forest region of Idukki for hunting. In 1963, the Central Planning Commission approved the Idukki Project.
